Temporary License Permits (also known as Trip Permits) allow vehicle owners to operate their unlicensed vehicles on public roadways. A vehicle is considered unlicensed if: the vehicle tabs are expired or the current gross weight isn't enough for the load being carried. These permits cannot be used in lieu of tonnage for a vehicle currently licensed in Washington but can be used to increase current tonnage. Permits are valid 3 consecutive days and no more than 3 permits can be issued for any 1 vehicle within a 30-day period.How much will this permit cost?

Permits are only for vehicles being used on public roadways, temporary license permits are not available for non-roadway and off-road vehicles, including snowmobiles, and ORV use class vehicles. Two axle vehicles with a gross weight of 12,000 lbs. or less and are currently licensed in another state, have reciprocity and are not required to license in Washington. Reciprocity also covers trailers that have current licensing in other states.Permit Timeliness Results

Each agency considers the customers experience to ensure permit assistance is simple to use, easy to access, and designed in a customer-friendly manner. Agencies report progress to the Governor’s Office for Regulatory Innovation and Assistance (ORIA). ORIA prepares and distributes reports, with participation from the State Auditor’s Office and Results Washington.
